Je gebruikt modals om een zin een extra functie te geven. Dit kan zijn om iemand beleefd iets te vragen, iemand te adviseren, overtuigen of iets heel dringend te maken.

Advies. You should study for English! 
Eigen verplichting: I should see a doctor, I haven't slept in weeks!

Must:
Verplichting: You must stop when the traffic light turns red. 
Logische conclusie: He must be very tired, he has been working all day!

  • You must come here. You are obliged to come (I require that you come)
  • You have to come here. You are obliged to come. (There's a rule requiring you to come)
  • Must I wear this tie? Am I obliged to wear this tie? (What do you think?)
  • Do I have to wear this tie? Am I obliged to wear this tie? (Is there a rule about ties?)
