definite article: the
  • The definite aricle is used before an uncountable noun or plural noun when it is followed by a phrase specifying exactly what is being talked about.

     I like the music they play at Christmas.

  • When a singular countable noun has been mentioned before you use the definite article because everybody already knows exactly what is being referred to.

     He hired a room. The room was very small and quite dirty.

  • the definite article is used for countries with a plural name or name of countries which contain a common noun

      He lives in the United Kingdom and I live in the Netherlands

  • the definite article is used with playing instruments

       My friend plays the piano.

  • the can be used before means of transport when talking about the use of different types of transport in general.

     We are going to take the train to Schiphol.

  • the definite article is for bodyparts when they are talked about in general

       The heart is the most important muscle in our body     

  • the definite article is used for the units we buy or sell commodities in ( + by)

        We sell these notebooks by the ton.

a is used before a consonant sound: a pear

an is used before a vowel sound:  an apple


  • the indefinite article is used the first time a singular countable noun is mentioned

       He lived in a castle. The castle was built on top of a hill.

  • the indefinite article can be used before means of transport when talking about the different types of transport in general.

      We are taking a bus to Rotterdam.

  • You put a before few/ little to change the meaning ( few = weinig, a few = een paar, a little = weinig, a little = een beetje

      We had a few cupcakes left and only a little icecream.

  • we use an indefinit article to describe someone or something in a way that applies to others

       He is an intelligent man ( there are more intelligent man)

  • we use the indefinite article when we talk about the price of the units we sell commidities in

      The strawberries are € 3 a pound.

  • with professions

       My mother works as a manager for IBM.

  • no article is used before uncountable and plural nouns when used in a general sense

     I hate sports

  • singular countable nouns can also have a determiner ( each, my, this, ...) instead of an article

,      exceptions are, among others, by car and in hospital

      My friend was brought to hospital in that new ambulance

  • no article is used before the names of most counries

       France is situated to the south of Holland

  • parts of the body are usually preceded by a possessive pronoun when they are talked about in the context of their relation to a specific body or bodies.

  • the word own must be preceded by a possessive pronoun and never by an article
