The passive 
  • Used in writing, formal speech
  • Focus on what's happening, doesn't matter who performs the action -> the object undergoes the action
Form = O + to be + past participle (+ S) 
Perfect tense = O + to have + been + past participle (+ S)
Active = John repaired my car                        
                     S          V                 O
Passive = My car was repaired (by John)
                          O                                    (S)

Step-by-step guide to formulating a correct sentence 
A)  I play tennis every Monday evening
B) He has built this bicycle from scratch
1. Read the sentence. Name the subject, verb and object.
2. Place the object at the beginning of the sentence. 
3. Check the tense -> present simple, past continuous, etc 
4. Use the same tense in the passive

Causatives 
  • Causatives 'cause' something to happen
-> they cause something to be allowed/forced
  • 4 causative verbs -> let, make, have & get
Examples
I got my friend to go skydiving with me! (=convinced)
He let me borrow his Lamborghini. (=allowed)
My teacher made me redo the homework! (=forced)

PART 1 - no mentioning of the performer of the action
Have
= To give someone the responsibility to do something 
Form = Subject + have + object + past participle


Example
I had my house cleaned


Get
= To trick someone in doing something, to convince someone to do something
Form =  Subject + get + object + past participle

Example
The students get their essays checked

PART 2 - mentioning of the performer of the action
Have
= To give someone the responsibility to do something
Form = subject + have + someone+ infinitive


Example
I had the electrician look at my broken light


Get
= To trick someone in doing something, to convince someone to do something
Form = subject + get + someone + to + infinitive

She gets her son to do his homework

PART 1
A) The builders replaced the broken window
1. Read the sentence. Name the subject, object and verb
2. Ask yourself: Is this about giving someone the responsibility to do something, or is someone convinced to so something?
3. If the answer is responsibility - use have
4. If the answer is convincing - use get
5. Ask yourself: Is the performer of the action mentioned?
6. If yes - include the performer in the sentence
7. If no - do not include the performer in the sentence

2. Ask yourself: Is this about giving someone the responsibility to do something, or is someone convinced to do something?

5. Ask yourself: Is the performer of the action mentioned?
6. If yes - include the performer in the sentence
7. If no - do not include the performer in the sentence
