Slide 1 - Diapositive

After this class
You can explain when senses convert stimuli into nerve impulses.
You can name the structure and function of three types of nerve cells.

Slide 2 - Diapositive

How impulses start
Stimulus needs to be strong enough. The lowest intensity of stimulus that causes an impulse = threshold value.

A stimulus must first reach the threshold value. If the stimulus then gets even stronger, the impulse frequency increases: more impulses are sent every second. The strength of the signal is always the same in an impulse

Slide 3 - Diapositive

Adequate stimuli
A stimulus that sensory cells are particularly sensitive for

Sensory cells in your eyes respond to light
Light is the adequate stimulus

Slide 4 - Diapositive

Non-adequate stimuli
Sometimes sensory organs will response to other stimuli
When you get hit in your eyes, you will see "stars"
But, the threshold value is higher than for the adequate stimulus

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Why do you 'forget' the feeling of wearing your clothes during the day?

Slide 6 - Diapositive

Habituation = gewenning

If a stimulus doesn't go away for a long time, your sensory cells will produce less impulses

You don't really feel your clothes on your body because of habituation

Tips for studying
Engels lastig?

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Lets get to work
- Read Bs. 7 and make exercise 1,2,3,4,5 (if you haven't done it yet)

- Done? Go to your studiewijzer: Som -> vakken -> biologie -> Perception -> checklist.
See what you already know. Read and practice what you don't know yet.
Write down any questions that you have!

Slide 12 - Diapositive

The nervous system
The nervous system is made up of:
  • the central nervous system
--> Brain + spinal cord

  • the nerves.
the nerves connect the central nervous system to all parts of the body.

Slide 13 - Diapositive

How does the nervous system work?
Notes:
Sensory cell receive stimulus from outside (ex. chocolate)
Sensory cells                                                                                                                         = impulses                            =   nerves

     brain

 muscles

Slide 14 - Diapositive

Structure of the nerve cell
Notes:
1. Cell body - located in or near the CNS
2. Axon - conducts (vervoert) impulses to and from cell body
