Relative clauses

Slide 20 - Diapositive

Relative clauses
Betrekkelijke bijzinnen
Geeft extra informatie over iets of iemand.
Who, which, that

Who = personen
Which = dieren en dingen
That = personen, dieren, dingen (informeel)

Slide 21 - Diapositive

Relative clauses
Sam, who lives next door, is my best friend.
Baking is something which I can't get enough of.
Dancing is a hobby that takes up a lot of my time.

Slide 22 - Diapositive

Relative clauses
Soms is de bijzin noodzakelijk om te begrijpen over wie/wat het gaat. Dan kun je who, which, that weglaten.

This is the man (who) I was talking about.
I bought the bicycle (that) the shop had on sale.

Slide 23 - Diapositive

Relative clauses
Soms geeft de bijzin alleen extra informatie. Je gebruik dan alleen maar who of which. Zo'n zin staat tussen komma's.

My brother, who likes fishing, bought a fishing rod.

Slide 24 - Diapositive

Relative clauses
Je kunt who en which samen met een voorzeltsel gebruiken (kast woordjes). Voorzetsel staat dan vaak achteraan de bijzin.

The gym which we always practise in is closed.
The instructor, who you told me about, is really nice.

Slide 25 - Diapositive

Relative clauses
Feeling fancy? Het voorzetsel kan ook vooraan in de zin, dit is formeler. Who verandert dan in whom.

The gym, in which we always practise, is closed.
The instructor, about whom you told me, is really nice.

Slide 26 - Diapositive

Relative clauses
Wil je het bezit van iets aangeven? Gebruik dan whose. In het Nederlands is dit waarvan, van wie, wiens of wier.

The girls, whose passion is dancing, went to the club.

Slide 27 - Diapositive
