Why did Europeans enslave Africans?

Plantations

The colonists founded plantations.
They had Indians work for them as slaves: very hard work.
16th century: mainly sugar
17th century: tobacco, cocoa, coffee

Silver mine Indians/slaves
Finding huge amounts of silver  in Mexico and the Andes.
Spain paid for its many wars with it: every year a large silver fleet sailed to Spain.

The conditions were horrific:
- along dangling rope ladders into the deep darkness
- climb back up with 40 kg bags

IIn 1543 the Spanish king banned Indian slavery.

The Spanish colonists brought black slaves from Africa.
Turned out to be much stronger: rarely sick.

More demand for plantation products in the 17th century:
The Dutch, French and English established plantations in the Western Caribbean.
