We call these Phrasal Verbs.

Google says:

"Phrasal verbs are a group of words that combine a verb with an adverb (bijwoord) or a preposition (voorzetsel). Together, these words act as a single verb and take on a whole new meaning that's independent from the meanings of the individual words."
We have them in Dutch too. Example: uitleggen, opmaken, uitschelden.

We took part in a special course  ->  we hebben deelgenomen aan een speciale cursus.
Joe dropped out of school. -> Joe is met school gestopt.
Lindsey and Ricardo were making out.  -> Lindsey en Ricardo waren aan het zoenen.
The police tracked down the thief. -> De politie spoorde de dief op.

Dear diary,

In addition to the tenses we learned this year. We are also going to learn 'Used to'.
Used to is used when something was true or was happening in the past. After used to, the whole verb is used.

The presenter used to work at a children’s programme.
He used to have a dating app on his phone.
We used to watch the news every evening.
