Reminder relative clauses
  • The homework, which you were supposed to do, was not difficult. (extra informatie tussen komma's = geen 'that')
  • The programme which/that/X we are about to listen to is about solving crimes. (noodzakelijke informatie, geen komma's, pronoun mag vaak weg)
  • The pupils who/that have studied the word list will have less difficulty preparing for the test.  (tussen haakjes? dan hebben alle leerlingen de woordenlijst bestudeerd)
  • The boy whose Chromebook wasn't charged was reported.

Tackling difficult words. 
While listening, you sometimes come across difficult words which you need to know to understand the fragment. 
You can often guess their meaning, for instance because you recognise part of the word.

Grammar feature: passive voice
A new crime was committed. <-> The criminal committed a new crime.
An investigation has been started. <-> The police have started an investigation.
The kitchen window was broken. <-> A burglar broke the kitchen window.
Expensive jewels could have been stolen. <-> The shoplifter could have stolen the jewels

Waarom? Wat er gebeurd is, is belangrijker dan wie iets gedaan heeft of het is onbekend wie het gedaan heeft. 
Hoe: to be & voltooid deelwoord.

Writing a newspaper article

To write a newspaper article you answer the following questions:

What happened? 
Where did it happen? 
When did it happen? 
Who is involved? 
Why did it happen?
How did it happen?

On Sunday at 3:30 pm, a fire broke out in a kitchen in a house on Westplantsoen in Delft. The fire was reported by a teacher who was working late in the school across the street. 
On arrival, the fire brigade’s first priority was to put out the fire, but then they were informed that five people were trapped inside the building. The fire fighters set up a rescue mission to get the residents, who were having a party on the rooftop, out safely. Fortunately, the fire was under control before it could reach the flats on either side of the burning house. 
After 4 hours of hard work, the fire was stopped. After that, an investigation was conducted by a team of police and forensic departments, which concluded that the cause of the fire was arson. A molotov cocktail had been thrown into the kitchen. No suspects have been found, yet.

Now it is your turn. LP1: Writing a newspaper article 

A house in your neighbourhood burned down. The police suspect that it was deliberately set on fire. Write a newspaper article about what happened. You have just received an update from the police about the investigation so tell your readers the latest developments.

Remember that newspaper articles try to answer the five WH-questions
what happened, when and where, who is involved & why did it happen.

Write 100 – 140 words in total. 
Make sure it looks like a real newspaper article. Add a picture and think of a catchy headline for your article.
Use the passive voice at least three times.
