Indirect speech

Indirect speech kun je vergelijken met roddelen in 'real life'.

Peter: I absolutely hate school.

Peter said (that) he absolutely hated school.

Je vertelt dat iemand anders iets op een eerder moment heeft gezegd.

Indirect speech

Als iemand iets zegt en jij dit vervolgens weer vertelt aan een ander, dan noemen we dit de indirecte rede.

Peter said (that) he absolutely hates school.

Indirect speech

Als je de indirecte rede gebruikt, dan mag je het woord 'that' gebruiken of weglaten in de Engelse zin.

Je begint de zin met .... said....

Sam said that she was reading a very good book.

Sam said she was reading a very good book.

Hoe vorm je de indirecte rede?

Indirecte rede gebruiken? > ga een stap terug in de tijd.
De werkwoorden veranderen.

Direct speech > Indirect speech.

Present simple > Past simple
Present continuous > Past continuous
Past simple > Past perfect

Present simple > Past simple

She (my grandmother) always said: ' I love watching football.'

My grandmother always said (that) she loved watching football.

Werkwoord vervoegen naar past simple > ww +ed of 2e vorm.

persoonlijk voornaamwoord verandert ook.

Present continuous > Past cont.

Present continuous > Past continuous

Michael explained, 'I am painting the house.'
Michael explained (that) he was painting the house.

am/are/is + (ww+ing) > was/were + (ww+ing)

persoonlijk voornaamwoord verandert soms ook!

Past simple > Past perfect

Thomas told us, 'I saw her last week.'

Thomas told us (that) he had seen her the week before.

Werkwoord vervoegen naar past perfect.
had + voltooid deelwoord.

Tijdsaanduiding verandert ook.

Veranderingen

Bij indirect speech verander je ook vaak het persoonlijk voornaamwoord, bezittelijk voornaamwoord en de tijdsaanduiding in de zin.

Trish: 'We don't like shopping.'
Trish said (that) they didn't like shopping.

Veranderingen

Shane: 'My father and I will do it right now.'
Shane said (that) his father and he would do it straight away.

Paula: 'I did my homework last Friday.'
Paula said (that) she had done her homework the Friday before.'

Tijdsaanduidingen veranderen

last weekend > the weekend before

last Thursday > the Thursday before

right now > straight away / right then
