Introduction

Part of the British Values series. In this lesson, pupils explore the meaning of the word immigration and look at why people move to the UK from their home countries.

Instructions

We have designed our British Values lessons so that teachers can pick up and teach a topic to their class with confidence.
We have chosen to use a balance of interactive tools and 'unplugged' creative activities.

This lesson can be used as part of a school's British Values curriculum.
It also links into the PSHE Association Programme of Study for KS2:
L1. to recognise reasons for rules and laws; consequences of not adhering to rules and laws
L2. to recognise there are human rights, that are there to protect everyone
L3. about the relationship between rights and responsibilities
L4. the importance of having compassion towards others; shared responsibilities
we all have for caring for other people and living things; how to show care and
concern for others
L5. ways of carrying out shared responsibilities for protecting the environment in school and at home; how everyday choices can affect the environment (e.g. reducing, reusing, recycling; food choices)
In this lesson, we will:
  • Understand what is meant by the word 'migration' and 'immigration' 
  • Consider some of the reasons people move from their home countries

The lesson is fully adaptable so you can tailor the content to the needs of your students and school context.

You can move/ group responses together and remember that whilst responses can be kept anonymous on the shared screen, you know exactly who has responded in the assessment area.

Why Do People Move from their
Home Country to Live in the UK?

Migrant
An Immigrant/Migrant: someone who choses to move from one country to another to live. A person might chose to move for different reasons, including:
• For work
• To be closer to family
• To study abroad
• For the climate or culture of a country
• For better opportunities
• For greater safety 
Refugee
A Refugee: someone who moves from one country to another to live because they are in fear of their
lives. A refugee could be someone escaping:
• War
• A natural disaster
• Poor treatment by their government
Asylum Seeker
An Asylum Seeker: someone who has applied for refugee status, and is waiting for their application
to be processed and a decision to be reached. Everyone has the legal right to seek asylum. 
Illegal Immigrant
An Illegal Immigrant: A person who either enters a country illegally, and doesn’t let the government
know that they are here, or who enters legally but then stays longer than they are allowed.

Zin is an Illegal Immigrant. The government do not know that he has arrived in the UK. 

There are many reasons why refugees do not report their status to the host country. Many are afraid for their lives and so are worried about the consequences of being found.

Choose a famous person (or someone you know) who migrated to the UK. Write about their reasons for coming to the UK.

This is a research task which can be adapted to suit the needs of your cohort.
Students are encouraged to research someone who has migrated to the UK.
This may be a friend or family member or it may be someone famous.
It would be valuable to choose a selection of migrants who have chosen to come to the UK for work or study and those who may have come as a refugee.
