Dad sighed.’

How does Colin feel during this scene at the very beginning of the story?

The pronunciation of the letter g depends on the letter that follows it.

g followed by e, i or y: pronunciation is 'soft'. It sounds like the letter j in 'juice'.
Examples: gymnastics, large, biology
Note: there are exceptions to this rule. Examples: get, girl and gear

g followed by any other letter: pronunciation is 'hard'.
Examples: golf, great, guy

when a word ends in a vowel followed by a g, the pronunciation is 'hard' as well.
Examples: leg, gig, dog
