  • 28 days on average
  • day 1-day 4: menstruation: shedding of the uterus lining
  • Follicular phase: between menstruation and ovulation
  • around day 14: ovulation: bursting of follicle in the ovary

  • Luteal phase: between ovulation and menstruation

  • Follicular phase: follicle grows and matures in ovary
  • Ovulation: Ripe follicle bursts and ovum is released
  • Ovulation is triggered by a hormone (LH)
  • Estrogen causes the uterus lining to grow thicker

  • progesterone: causes the uterus lining to get more glands and more blood vessels

  • menstruation is caused by a LACK of progesterone 
  • corpus luteum is degenerating
