Slide 13 - Question de remorquage

‘Clark initially used his powers covertly to help people and prevent disasters. Ultimately, he was forced to use his powers in public.’

You may know some things about Superman already. If you knew Clark led a regular, everyday life as a human being and had a secret superhero identity, you may know the meaning of 'covertly'.

Slide 14 - Diapositive

Look at the text around the word ‘covertly’.
‘Initially’ means first, ‘ultimately’ means last.
What does this tell you?
Opposite meaning, so ‘covertly’ could be opposite of ‘publicly’.
Same meaning, so ‘covertly’ could be the same as ‘publicly’.

Writers organise information, ideas and arguments by using different structures.

Sequence and chronology is one of those structures:
  • sequence: indicates that things happen in a certain order
  • chronology: describes when something takes place
first, next, then, finally, earlier, before, after, soon, eventually, initially, in the past, later, now, nowadays, once, once upon a time, present, present-day, today, until, (mean)while.

Slide 17 - Diapositive
