Waves and tides break up our coast and regrow in other places

Waves
Waves = are ripples in a body of water usually caused by wind blowing across the surface.
The height and force of a wave depend on three factors:
  • the force of the wind. 
  • the length of time the wind blows
  • the distance travelled by the waves is important.

The sea destroys
Breakers = Waves that break in shallow water along the coast.

Once past the breakers, the water flows onto the beach. The force of the backwash determines whether a coast is built up or broken down. 

A strong backwash destroys the coast

abrasion coast: Coast where the waves take away more material than they leave behind.


With a abrasion coast strong backwash takes a lot of material back into the sea

Abrasion coast/Cliffed coast
  • A cliffed coast is made up of hard and soft rock
  • Wave collides with coast
  • Soft rock erodes away faster than hard rock
  • The hard rock remains jutting out to sea
  • Waves undermine the foot of the cliff --> holes and sea caves
  • After a while, the overhanging hard rock breaks off, crumbles and falls, and the coast recedes
  • Eat, sleep, erode, repeat

Winter storms
Due to low-pressure areas over the ocean, Ireland, UK and sometimes NL experience severe storms.

This causes rapid coastal erosion
