In de meeste gevallen gebruik je 's

• My friend's dog stinks.
• Our sister's hobby is horseriding.
  
• That is my boss's car.
  

POSSESSIVES

Als een woord mv en al op -s eindigt zet je alleen ' erachter:

• Our friends' apartment is at the top floor.
• I found the students' books on that desk over there.
• Their neighbours' dog is barking all day.

... of ... gebruik je voor alle andere possessives: vaak twee niet 'levende' dingen:

• the top of the hill
• the importance of the plan
• the banks of the river
• the roof of the building
• the outskirts of town
