Present Perfect and Past Simple
refers to a period of time:  I've lived in Rio for many years.
refers to a point in time: They've had this bar since 1970.
We have been to Sao Paolo
We went to Sao Paolo in 2012. (one specific point in time)

The Past Simple vs The Present Perfect
We use the Past Simple for events that are FINISHED
We use The Present Perfect fo events that refer to a duration in time.

Past Simple: My family lived here for 12 years. (not any more)
Pesent Perfect: My family have lived here for 12 yeas now. (still there)
