segregate = separate two groups to keep them physically apart from each other -> housing, education, services

Laws in 18th and 19th century America because people believed black and white couln't coexist

Origins?

Slavery abolished in 1865 in America

The South: slaves worked on large plantations where crops like cutton were produced

Consequences for those slaves? They continued to live in the US -> Laws -> segregation
