Past continuous

Je gebruikt de past continuous om aan te geven dat je ergens mee bezig was op een bepaald moment in het verleden. Je zegt dus dat je iets aan het doen was.

Je gebruikt de past continuous dus als je wilt zeggen wat  je aan het doen was op een bepaald moment.

The detective was looking for clues .

The investigator was taking notes.

The investigator was smoking a pipe.

The detective was hiding behind a paper.

Je maakt de past continuous door was of were voor 

het werkwoord te zetten en –ing er achter

I was sleeping

You were living

He/she/it was swimming

We were going

You were doing

They were having

Als een werkwoord uit 1 lettergreep bestaat met 1 klinker in het midden, verdubbelt de klinker

To swim – He was swimming

To hit – We were hitting

To get - He was getting hit 

               by the crook

Als een werkwoord eindigt op een -e verdwijnt de -e als

je er -ing achter zet

To have – He was having

To smoking – We were smoking

To hide - He was hiding behind

                 the newspaper
