• Which new trade opportunities did the Dutch Republic discover in the 17th century? (global economy / precursor companies / Dutch East India Company (VOC) / trade monopoly / Dutch West India Company (WIC) / triangular trade / plantation slavery) 

VOC & WIC

All Dutch trading companies that trade with the East Indies work together in the Dutch East India Company

• Only they are allowed to trade there (=trade monopoly)
• They are allowed to go to war (they have an army!)

VOC & WIC

Because of the success of the VOC the WIC is founded (West India Company)

• They have a monopoly on trade with America
• They are involved in privateering
• Because of competition they aren't as succesful as the VOC
