• Emperor Deocletian built the Limes
• = system of forts and watchtowers to protect the Empire from Germanic Tribes.

• Rome became too big to govern.
• A lot of civil wars were fought.
• Rome was split between West and East

Invading tribes

• Germanic tribes entered the Empire.
• In 410 AD the Visigoths sacked Rome.
• The Goths and Vandals invaded.
• In 476 the last western emperor was removed: Romules Augustules
