  1. How long have you lived at your current home address?
  2. How long have you had your best friend?
  3. Have you ever wanted to live in another area/country & where?
  4. When did you do you homework yesterday & why (not)?
  5. When was the last time you felt very happy & why?

Essay - thesis and linking words
Thesis = topic of your essay at the end of the introduction; a statement (not a question) that you are going to prove 









Linking words = words that make your writing logical (coherent), for example by summing up arguments:
 first of all, moreover, also

Essay feedback - 10 min.
Swap essays with your classmate  & Check the following for your classmate's persuasive/argumentative essay and award 1 point for each (1-5):
  1. Lay-out correct - 4 paragraphs:  introduction; argument 1 + explanation + example ; argument 2 + explanation + example; conclusion (no new arguments)
  2. Does the introduction end with one sentence (thesis) saying E-pals is a great way to gain insight into other cultures/countries 
  3. Do paragraphs 2 and 3 each contain one convincing argument to support why E-pals provides insight into cultures/countries AND are the two arguments explained?
  4. Do paragraphs 2 and 3 each start with a linking word, a word that connects the paragraphs in a logical way (first of all, also, moreover etc.)
  5. Does the conclusion sum up the two arguments and say E-pals is a good way to understand other cultures

2) Draw a mind map for each of the following (2 separate mind maps):

1) Government control - who/what

2) Main character - who/what does he/she do to fight back or question the government

Thesis = The novel "The Maze Runner" is about a dystopian society

Point 1 or Argument 1 = The government/ WICKED (World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department) is in control.
Explain your argument = why are they in control
Example = what do they do

Point 2 or Argument 2 = The main character fights the government/WICKED
Explain your argument = why do they fight the government
Example = what does he/she do?

Point 3 or Argument 3 =There is technological control in the novel.
Explain your argument = who controls the people/society
Example = what do they do?

Writing the essay

  • Use an essay lay-out: intro (1 paragraph) / body (3 paragraphs) / conclusion (1 paragraph)

  • Use formal language (not: gonna, wanna, way too much, etc)

  • Avoid  personal pronouns I/you/we

  • Use linking words (also, moreover, even though, nonetheless etc.) to logically connect paragraphs

  • Use examples from the novel to support your arguments (1 argument per paragraph)
