Exercise 3 - Listening (p. 65)

1.  1. My mother is a businesswoman. She works at home. She sells jewellery.
2.  My father is a soldier. He’s in the army. He drives a lorry.
3.  My sister is a waitress. She works in a restaurant. She works six days a week.
4.  My uncle is a cleaner. He works in a hotel. He works in the evening.

Prepositions

A preposition is an extra word in the sentence.

It tells you something about:

- Place: Please put the book on the shelf. / They live in Helsinki.

- Direction: The boy tumbled down the hill.

- Time: Her birthday is on 20 November.

.Prepositions used after verbs:

Sun cream protects you from getting burnt.

Listen and draw (prepositions)

Give the following instructions:

• Open a blank page in your note book.
• Draw a medium sized square in the middle of the page.
• Draw a rectangle inside the square with its shorter side touching the bottom of the square in the middle.
• Draw two small squares inside the bigger square at the same level on the either side of the rectangle.
• Draw a triangle on top of the square.
• On top of the triangle draw a small flag.
• Draw two trees beside the big square.
• Draw a swing inbetween two branches.
• Draw three steps below and touching the big square.
• Under the trees draw a small pond with fish swimming.
• Draw a few birds above the flag.
• Draw a few mangoes hanging from the trees.
• Draw a fence around the big trees.
• Draw mangoes lying on the ground.
• Draw the sun over the birds

 Vocabulary Note: begin and start

 These words have the same meaning and are used in the same way at this level. There are a few situations where we use ‘start’ but not ‘begin’ (for

example, with machines working, ‘The car won’tstart’), but this is nothing to worry about at the Preliminary level.
