Past simple
Something
important
that happened in the past;
Recognized by words like "Yesterday, last year, this morning, in 2013";
Regular verbs: word + -ed;
For example, "Called, helped, played";
Irregular verbs have different forms (learn by heart);
For example, "ran, sang, bought"

Negative and question sentences:
Did/didn't + verb;
For example, "Did you buy that?" "I didn't buy that."

Special cases regular verbs:
Ending in "-y" -> "-ied"
For example, "Try" becomes "Tried"
Ending in "-e" -> +-d
For example, "Arrange" becomes "Arranged"
Ending in short vowel -> double consonant + -ed
For example, "Plan" becomes "Planned"
More than one syllable + ending in "l" -> double "l" + -ed
For example, "Travel" becomes "Travelled"

Use the present perfect when:
Something happened in the past, but the time is not important;
For example, "I have worked on that."
Something started in the past and is still going on;
For example, "I have been here since 10 o'clock."
Have/has + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

Regular verbs end in -ed;
For example, "work" becomes "worked"
Irregular verbs have their own forms;
For example, "be" becomes "been"
