  • Correctly explain and use the present perfect.

Past simple
  • Something important that happened in the past;
  • Recognized by words like "Yesterday, last year, this morning, in 2013";
  • Regular verbs: word + -ed;
  • For example, "Called, helped, played";
  • Irregular verbs have different forms (learn by heart);
  • For example, "ran, sang, bought"

  • Negative and question sentences:
  • Did/didn't + verb;
  • For example, "Did you buy that?" "I didn't buy that."

  • Special cases regular verbs:
  • Ending in "-y" -> "-ied"
  • For example, "Try" becomes "Tried" 
  • Ending in "-e" -> +-d
  • For example, "Arrange" becomes "Arranged"
  • Ending in short vowel -> double consonant + -ed
  • For example, "Plan" becomes "Planned"
  • More than one syllable + ending in "l" -> double "l" + -ed
  • For example, "Travel" becomes "Travelled"

Present perfect
  • Use the present perfect when:
  • Something happened in the past, but the time is not important;
  • For example, "I have worked on that."
  • Something started in the past and is still going on;
  • For example, "I have been here since 10 o'clock."
  • Have/has + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

  • Regular verbs end in -ed;
  • For example, "work" becomes "worked" 
  • Irregular verbs have their own forms;
  • For example, "be" becomes "been"
