• Bij positieve zinnen: "I need some books."
•  Bij vragen waar je er van uit gaat dat het antwoord ja is:

 "Do you want some cake?"

Wanneer gebruiken we any?

• Bij negatieve zinnen: " I don't have any books."
• Bij vragen waar je het antwoord niet op weet: 

"Do you have any tomatoes left?" 

I don't have some/any sugar left. I'll go and borrow some/any from the neighbour.

Plural (meervoud)

Most nouns (zelfstandige naamwoorden) have a regular form. You make these words plural by adding an -s.

gift - gifts

phone - phones

message - messages

Note! Never use -'s for the plural form.

Nouns that end with an -s, -ss, -x, -z or -ch get -es.

bus - buses

match - matches

glass - glasses

box - boxes

quiz - quizzes

Some nouns have different plural forms. Nouns that end with a consonant (medeklinker) and -o usually get -es.

hero - heroes

tomato - tomatoes

echo - echoes

There are exceptions, however:

photo - photos 

solo - solos

Nouns that end with an -f or sometimes with -fe get -ves.

shelf - shelves

dwarf - dwarves

knife - knives

Nouns that end with a -y that sound like /i:/ and have a consonant before the -y get -ies.

party - parties

baby - babies

penny - pennies

When the word ends in a vowel (klinker) +y, it just gets an -s.

key - keys

boy - boys

Some nouns have an irregular plural form and get a completely different plural form. You have to learn these by heart.

child - children

foot - feet

tooth - teeth

woman - women

man - men

mouse - mice

Some singular words are always used in plural form. The verbs and other words that go with them are also used in the plural form.

 My trousers/jeans/shorts are too long.

His sunglasses are cool.

These scissors are very sharp.
