Goals:

- use your knowledge of writing a formal letter in an e-mail you write yourself

- get new info on writing and use that to improve your letter

Salutations

Dear Judy, (comma)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Always try to find a name, position, get creative: Dear hiring manager, Dear future colleage.

Hi, someone you know, informal but not too friendly

Anything else, strictly friends etc.: hiya, hey, 

Closings

Kind regards,  : standard, always a safe option

Regards,   : when you don't like the person

Thanks again,   :(repeated work email)

Informal: cheers,

- Write your letter

- Use the assignment in the booklet

- Make sure you focus on:

    - Opening, closing

    - Punctuation, spelling

    - Paragraph use

    - Word order

    - Fitting use of language (register)

Standard sentences

Conjunctions (linking words)

To make your writing more  natural, use these five words which connect ideas. 

And: uitbreiding, "en"

     - We went to the beach and loved it cause it was so sunny!

But: tegenstelling "maar".

      - We went to the beach, but the water was too cold for swimming

Although tegenstelling "ookal".

      - Although it was raining, we went to the beach anyway

Because: reden "omdat"

     - We went to the beach because it was a sunny day

So: gevold "dus"

     - It was a sunny day so we went to the beach.

Make 5 sentences. 1 sentences for each of these words:
1. And 2. But 3. Although 4. Because 5. So

Fill in the exercise that you get. Choose from the words at the top of the page.

2. Harder words. Look up the meaning yourself is you don't know them.

Writing

Go back to your letter and see if you can use these words anywhere. Maybe replace a period (punt) with one of these words so it connects two senteces. Or replace a word with one of these words, creating a smoother transition. 

I'd rather you overdo it than be sparesome.

Find an article/audio/video for your language portfolio. Read it/listen to it and make entries in your vocabulary bank. Make sure to paste the link in your portfolio as well.
