What are we doing this period?
For the next period we are going to explore the 
English language and different cultures. You will have to hand in some individual assignments and some group assignments.
All of these added up will be you grade for this period.

Task for this week
You will need to form groups of no more than four people.
For this week your task is to colour all the flags and countries on the map where English is an official language. You will need to look them up online and also look up the flag. Both need to be coloured! The flags obviously in the right colours. 
You will be graded as a group and this will be part of you grade at the end of this period.

  • 43 BC -  383 AD: the Romans conquer Britain fighting the Celtic tribes including the Picts in what is nowadays Scotland
  • 449 AD:  The Jutes, Angles and Saxons arrive in Britain (tribes from Denmark and Germany)
  • 1066: the Normans invade Britain (descendants from Vikings living in France - Normandy

The Brits conquered territories and took the resources such as:
  • diamonds from South Africa
  • sugar cane from the Caribbean
  • tea and spices from India
  • tobacco from America
People were subjects of the English crown.
English was made the official languages of these countries.

The British Commonwealth
An international association of 56 member states, the vast majority of which are former colonies of the British Empire.
The Head of the Commonwealth is King Charles III.
The Commonwealth works on behalf of member countries to promote peace and prosperity. 
In World War I and World War II they work(ed) together.
Nowadays most of them are independent countries.
