Chapter 4: Natural disasters in Japan

Slide 1 - Diapositive

What is a natural disaster?

Slide 2 - Question ouverte

Natural disaster
'A natural disaster is a disaster caused by nature which can cause many casualties and widespread damage'

Slide 3 - Diapositive

What types of natural disasters do you know?

Slide 4 - Question ouverte

There are two types of natural disasters. Which two types you think?

Slide 5 - Question ouverte

Forces that change the earth's crust

Exogenic force=
From the outside
Endogenic force=
from the inside

Slide 6 - Diapositive

Exogenic
Two exogenic forces:

Changes earth's crust caused by weather.

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Endogenic force: Plate tectonics

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Note!!!

Endo
genic force: forces from the inside: earthquakes, volcano's caused by convection currents.

Exogenic force: force from the outside: caused by weather.

Slide 13 - Diapositive

Wat zorgt ervoor dat platen bewegen?
A
Convectiestroming
B
Convectiebeweging
C
Exogene krachten
D
Subductie

Slide 14 - Quiz

Hoe noem je de drie plaatbewegingen?

Slide 18 - Diapositive

Types of plates
Note:
Oceanic plate:
- Very heavy!

Continental plate:
- Lighter than oceanic plate.

Slide 19 - Diapositive

Subduction
The heavy oceanic plate is
 forced under the continental
plate.

The oceanic plate melts >
 becomes magma

Magma rises to the surface and creates a volcano.

Slide 20 - Diapositive

Plate boundaries

Transform

Slide 22 - Question de remorquage

Slide 23 - Vidéo

Note!
Convection current

=  the flow of molten rock under the earths crust.

Slide 24 - Diapositive

Convergent plate boundary
Because of this movement mountain chains will eventually develop in the regions next to the convergent boundary.

The Alps are an example of such a mountain chain.

Slide 25 - Diapositive

Divergent plate boundary
Two tectonic plates which move apart.

Oceanic ridge
Underwater mountains formed by a divergent plate boundary.

Slide 26 - Diapositive

Transform plate boundary

Where 2 tectonic plates slide alongside each other .

Earthquakes are common

Slide 27 - Diapositive

Draw the directions of plate movement
1.Convergent

2.Divergent

3.Transform

Fill in the blanks: Apply the words Prosperous (welvarend), Jerky (schokkerig), Eruption (uitbarsting) ,Arc (Boog), Volcano
Japan is a ...1......country in East Asia. It is part of the ring of fire
The ring of fire is an....2.....shaped ring around the pacific plate. Along the plate boundaries you can find multiple......3.....
They ......4.....when magma rises in the subductionzone.

Plates collide not always very smooth, normally they have ....5.....movements and earthquakes are created.

Slide 30 - Diapositive

Now you are able to:
1. Explain what the ring of fire is

2.Draw the several directions of plate movement.

Languageaim: Explain what the words: prosperous, eruption, (shape of an) arc and jerky mean.

Slide 31 - Diapositive

What is the driving force behind plate tectonics?

C
Mantle
D
