Met used to + infinitief beschrijft men een gewoonte in het verleden, of een situatie die enige tijd bestond en nu niet meer.

He used to smoke, but he stopped two years ago.

Vroeger rookte hij altijd, maar hij is twee jaar geleden gestopt.

You used to cycle to your work. Why have you stopped?

Je fietste vroeger altijd naar je werk. Waarom ben je daarmee gestopt?

We used to live in a small village, but now we live in London.

Vroeger woonden we altijd in een klein dorp, maar nu wonen we in Londen.
