What is the plastic soup?

In 1997 zeilde Charles Moore, kapitein van een raceboot en oceanograaf, van Hawaii naar Zuid-Californië. Midden op de Grote Oceaan zag hij dagelijks stukken plastic langsdrijven. Later keerde hij terug naar het gebied om dat te onderzoeken. De concentratie van plastic op deze plek was opvallend hoger dan elders in de oceaan. Bovendien bleek het plastic niet alleen te drijven, maar zwierf het ook onder water. Moore noemde het verschijnsel de plastic soep, een term die nu in de hele wereld gebruikt wordt.
