We gebruiken de past continuous voor handelingen of gebeurtenissen die in het verleden voor een bepaalde tijd gaande waren.

Adverbs (bijwoorden) give information about verbs, (werkwoorden) and how the action in a sentence happens.
(These usually end with -ly)

I greatly appreciate your help.
Why are you walking so slowly?

Adverbs can also give more information about adjectives.

The incredibly small mouse.
The very ugly armchair.

Noun=zelfstandignaamwoord
Verb=werkwoord
Adjective=bijvoegelijknaamwoord
Adverb=bijwoord

Adverb spelling
Adverbs usually end in -ly. 
When a word ends in -y -> -ily easy -> easily
When a word ends in -le -> -ly terrible -> terribly
When a word ends in -c -> -ally basic -> basically

Some adverbs do not follow the spelling rules and do not get a new ending:
hard, fast, high, near, short, late

Sometimes you hear the -ly version of these words, but those words have another function (don't worry about this for now)
