farther - farthest gebruik je als het om een echte afstand gaat (Australia is farther than Turkey) & further - furthest gebruik je in figuurlijke afstanden (This problem needs further investigation).

*** het regelmatige old - older - oldest bestaat ook, maar vooral bij personen gebruik je het onregelmatige old-elder-eldest. Elder en eldest kun je alléén gebruiken als bijvoeglijk naamwoord voor een zelfstandig naamwoord, bijv.: he is my elder brother (hij is mijn oudere broer). Je kunt dus niet zeggen: "He is elder than Jim", maar wel: "He is older than Jim."
