In this section you will learn:

Ancient Greece in the modern world

Greek mythology tells us a lot about the time of the Greeks, for example that there were cities

The Greek world around 500 BC.

City states (polis/poleis):

• The Greeks lived in an agricultural- urban society.
• Ancient Greece was it was not a united state, but consisted of several city-states. 
• These city-states were autonomous; they had their own government and army
  

autonomous = indepent 

Many Greek cities formed around an acropolis

Causes of Colonisation:

• only 20% of the Greek land was suitable for agriculture.
  
• the population grew, so farmers could no longer produce enough food for everyone.

Consequences of colonisation:

• Greeks left their city states by ship to settle elsewhere.
  
• Greek colonies were formed along the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea.
• The Greeks had contacts with other people. (for example the Romans)

Assignment: create your own greek colony!

Everyone gets in pairs a poster.

Greec colonies were formed along the coasts of the Medditeranean Sea and Black Sea

Means of existence of the ancient Greeks:

• Trade, every city has a market square (the agora)
  
• industry, (crafts)
  
• fishing
  
• Agriculture.

The Greek economy grew thanks to colonisation

Thank to trade, contact between people grew and their cultures changed.
