Important terms and developments
Guilds are groups which represent people with the same profession. They have their own rules, decide over pricing etc. Most likely there is a headmaster, one or two apprentices and a few associates.
At the beginning of the 16th century businesses wanted to grow and expand, therefore these older rules were slowly changed.

The Gregorian calendar was introduced by pope Gregory XIII. The calendar before this one was running 10 days behind, what made it difficult to determine when certain christian holidays were supposed to be celebrated.
Recalculations by experts came to a solution. This solution we now know as the 'Schrikkeljaar'.

The renaissance
The renewed interest in the antiquity, which started in italy around 1500, spread across Europe. The french called it Renaissance which means rebirth.
This renewed interest made peoples view of the world change as well. It became much more positive. The motto/mentality now was Carpe diem instead of memento mori
