Retail therapy

Retail therapy, or shopping with the primary purpose of improving the buyer’s mood is a myth, right? Well, no actually. A recent study has found that shopping can actually be an effective way of decreasing feelings of sadness.

Researchers in the UK asked shoppers on their way into a shopping centre to describe how they were feeling. They then measured their mood level again after they had been shopping. Those who had been in a bad mood before they went in were found to have raised their mood level by buying something to cheer themselves up.

The research was funded by business owners, who wanted to know if their store design was appropriate. They are pleased with the results, and are thinking about inviting the researchers to repeat the research in other locations.

Reading Strategy: Skimming
If you want to get a general idea of what a text is about, you can skim it.

When you skim, you:
-read the title and / or heading(s);
-look at the pictures and words in bold, italics or colour;
-read the first and last lines of the text (or paragraph).

So: skimming means that you read a text very quickly. You don’t read every word.

Reading Strategy: Scanning
If you need to find specific information, like numbers, names or dates, you can scan a text.

1. Read the question.
2. Select  key words from the question.
3. Scan the text, look for the key words in the text.
4. Read the text surrounding the key words carefully.
5. Answer the question.
