This unit is all about being able to function in a foreign environment. Students will practise the vocabulary, expressions and idioms they need to help themselves in all sorts of situations in a foreign country, such as: seeing a doctor, buying clothes, ordering food and drinks at a restaurant, reporting a loss or theft at a police station, etc.

The assessment of this unit will be a visit to a ‘village’ (or an airport) where students will visit various locations, and act out a number of prescribed scenarios with native speakers of Dutch.

  1. Draw a map. On the map is your home, and the route you take to school. Draw landmarks.
  2. Work in pairs. Put a pawn on your home. Tell your classmate how you travel to school.  Take turns.
  3. Imagine your classmate has had a sleepover at your house. Explain him/her how to get to school. He/she has to move the pawn over the map following your instruction.
