Today's lesson: Reading Strategies SKIMMING 

and 

SCANNING

Some of you have already given a few good suggestions of how you approached the text. Today, we will practice using 2 strategies that come in handy during the reading test (especially if you feel like you always run out of time during the test)

At the end of this lesson...

You will be able to explain the term 'skimming'.

You will be able to explain the term 'scanning'.

You will be able to apply both 'skimming' and 'scanning' when reading texts.

Reading strategies

Together, we'll read 2 texts and answer a couple of questions about them.

Text #1:
Find the word

 'enema'. Put your TEAMS hand up when you find it.

1 One hot evening in Padua they carried him up onto the roof and he could look out over the top 2 of the town. There were chimney swifts in the sky. After a while it got dark and the searchlights 3 came out. The others went down and took the bottles with them. He and Luz could hear them  4 below on the balcony. Luz sat on the bed. She was cool and fresh in the hot night.

5 Luz stayed on night duty for three months. They were glad to let her. When they operated on 

6 him she prepared him for the operating table; and they had a joke about friend or enema. He  

7 went under the anaesthetic holding tight on to himself so he would not blab about anything  

8 during the silly, talky time. After he got on crutches he used to take the temperatures so Luz    9 would not have to get up from the bed. There were only a few patients, and they all knew about 10 it. They all liked Luz. As he walked back along the halls he thought of Luz in his bed.

How to scan: 

- Know what information you are looking for (so see the question first)

- Move your eyes through the text quickly

Text 2: What is the main topic of this paragraph? 

Put your TEAMS hands up when you know it.

We all know what an egg looks like, right? Well, we might know less than we think—bird eggs can be spheres, teardrops and anything in between. An interdisciplinary group of scientists may have made progress in cracking the mystery behind how these different shapes emerged.

A new study in Science shows that differences in flight ability might actually start as early as the egg: birds that take to the skies have more elliptical, asymmetrical eggs, while land-bound birds (like ostriches) have more spherical eggs.

Main topic: Eggs of different birds and its shapes. Why are they so different.

When reading text #2, which strategy do you think you used?

Skimming

You skim a text to get a general idea of what the text is about.

How to skim:

- Look at the title, subheadings, pictures and read the first an last lines of the paragraph

Why should you skim?

- To save time and to orientate yourself what the text is about

Reading strategies

We use strategies while reading to make it easier and less time consuming to answer questions about texts.

Skimming and scanning are two reading strategies.

1. Look at the title and the photo

2. write the key words about what do you already know about the topic...

What do you think the text will be about? What do you already know about the topic?
What, where, why, what happens..

STEP 2: W = what do we Want to find out?
Think of 3 questions that you think will be answered after you read the article?

2. Read the article. Try to see if the article answers all your questions. Go back to the assignment 1 (What do you Want to know) and write YES, NO or PARTLY next to the question.

HOMEWORK

1. Read the text:   Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all (Word.doc pg. 14)

3. Highlight where in the text you found your answers (or the clues for the answer)

4. The next lesson we will look through it together

Lesson 2: Inference

INFERENCE

We use inferences already in our daily life. 

Just look at instagram: 

What can we say based on the photo evidence about this person?

Ask the students what they can notice about this person from the photo? What are her interests?

ONLY based on the evidence.

She likes make up, chocolate, food, fashion...

What is an inference in reading?

- a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence, clues and reasoning

- the answers aren't always there black on white, you have to get it from clues and evidence from the text

- we use prior/background knowledge

We do the same in reading. 

Sometimes things aren't specifically mentioned but we can see from the clues and evidence an extra information that is not explicitely stated.

Example

Practice => How could you explain this riddle:
There is a pipe, a carrot and a pile of pebbles together in the middle of a field.
How come?

In order to figure this out you had to previously in your life have made a snowman. Based on that background knowledge you were able to connect the dots that there used to be a snowman there.

Explain the riddle:
Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice all live in the same house. Bob and Carol
go out to a movie, and when they return, Alice is lying dead on the floor in a
puddle of water and glass. It is obvious that Ted killed her but Ted is not
prosecuted or severely punished.

Group work: WHO KIDNAPPED THE PRINCIPAL.doc

- Get in groups of 4-5 (teams breakout rooms)

- Do the assignment: Who kidnapped the principal?

- Talk to each other in breakout rooms

- You have to use evidence and clues (inference) to complete the assignment

- one member of the group hands-in the document on TEAMS

Tips for TEAMS Breakout rooms:

- Appoint one student to make notes (that student can share their screen so you can all see what (s)he is writing)

- The teacher will be switching from one breakout room to another to give you some pointers and see how you are doing

See how the inference can help you figure out the unknown words. Do the assignment below. Do not help yourself with a dictionary in this case. Just see if you can figure out the meaning of the word based on the clues around it.
