WW 1 aka The Great War
It was called the Great War because it showed the enormous scale of the conflict. It was a war that had never been seen before. It was one of the deadliest conflicts of the time: may soldiers lost their lives over very little gain.

The impact of the Great War
Everybody thought to be "at home before Christmas" at the start of the war. There were feelings of nationalism, pride, romantic patriotism at the beginning of the war. 
However, that changed during the four years of life in the trenches.

    In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
         Between the crosses, row on row,
       That mark our place; and in the sky
       The larks, still bravely singing, fly
    Scarce heard amid the guns below.
    We are the dead. Short days ago
    We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
       Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In the poem “In Flanders fields”, it is said
“We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow . . .”
This is referring to how soldiers could die within days of reaching the front, this is only one of the many horrors of the great war. What kind of effect would this have had on the surviving soldiers and how is WW1 poetry influenced by them? (4-5

PUPILS ASWERS SUGGESTION!!
The surviving soldiers, especially while the war was still going on, would have been frightened, depressed, angered etc. the specific feelings depending on the soldiers themselves of course. These negative emotions would have been brought over into the poets’ writing. This made the poems considerably darker and gave them more depth and meaning. Most of the time, the worse the mental state of the poet, the better the poem.
