How do you go about a text?

Read the sign and choose the correct answer

1. Go upstairs to make an appointment with the nurse.
2. The nurse can only see patients with appointments.
3. The nurse will tell you when it is your turn.
4. Wait upstairs to see the nurse.

What does this sign mean?

1. We prefer cash for large sales.
2. If you spend less than £10, you cannot pay by credit card.
3. We make a charge if you pay by credit card.
4. If you spend more than £10, you cannot pay by credit card.

What does this sign say?

1. We do not serve lunch on Fridays.
2. We will not be open next Friday lunchtime.
3. This shop closes early on Friday.
4. This shop doesn't close for lunch on Fridays.

READING TEST

1. On paper,  two booklets:
   - Textbook
   - Assignmentbook
   
   
2. Don't forget to bring your ID and a dictionary, if you want to use that!

During the test:

• What is the aim (doel) of the text?
  
• Try to find the main thought (hoofdgedachte) from each text or paragraph
• Guess unfamiliar words or look them up, but: only if you think they are important!
• Try to seperate (uit elkaar halen) opinions and facts

READING STRATEGIES

• Skimming = globaal lezen, om een idee te krijgen waar het                                 over gaat 
• Scanning = snel zoeken naar bepaalde informatie
  
  
• Intensive reading = zo goed lezen dat je alles begrijpt

Most times you have to combine the reading strategies.
Skimming is something you always should do!

Whether you have to scan a text or read it intensively, depends on the information you are looking for, so it depends on what question is asked.

 

Texts are organised

Every text consist of: 

- an introduction

- the story itself

- a conclusion

Texts are structured

Sequence and chronology:

events are displayed (weergegeven) in chronological order or there is a list of steps how to make or do something (like a manual or a recipe)

Signalwords here are for example:

first, second, third ..., next, after that, finally, meanwhile

Texts are structured

Comparison and contrast:

events are compared with eachother, contrasts and/or similarities are mentioned in the text
(vergelijkingen, tegenstellingen of overeenkomsten)

Signalwords here are for example:

just like, too, opposite, on the other side, although

Texts are structured

Cause and effect:

in the text is explained why something happens and what happens next

(oorzaak en gevolg)

Signalwords here are for example:

because, since, consequently

Texts are structured

Another way that texts can be structured is:
              problem and solution 
              (probleem en oplossing)
