The subject performs an action 


My boyfriend plays the guitar

I walk the dog. 
Passive 

The subject is receiving/undergoing an action

The guitar is played by my boyfriend.
The dog is walked by me.

Quite popular in news episodes 

In the passive voice it is not that important WHO did the action, the action/the result is most important 

Let's go back to my example:

My sister got attacked by pengiuns
I want to emphasize that my sister was a victim
 

Penguins attacked my sister 
I want to emphasize that it was penguins that attacked

My brother drives me to school/ I am driven to school
My mom cooks Italian food / Italian food is cooked by my mom.
I did the laundry / the laundry was done by me
I washed the car /  the car was washed by me

So:
Present tense ---> am/are/is + voltooid deelwoord (3e rijtje)

Past tense ---> was/were + voltooid deelwoord

On board were the so called settlers who were looking for religious freedom

the first succesfull harvest
