How to use the gerund?

Werkwoord + -ing, zonder een vorm van to be. Het is een werkwoord dat als zelfstandig naamwoord wordt gebruikt.

For example: She enjoys reading books about foreign cultures.

When do we use gerunds?

• After these prepositons (voorzetsels): about, without, to, from, for, on, of.

For example: 

My parents are talking about going out.

What’s the chance of winning that match?

• After these verbs:

To hate, to like, to prefer, to enjoy, to avoid, to remember, to refuse, to mind, to keep, to spend

For example:

I like spending money on my horse.

I don’t mind travelling by train every day.

• As part of a subject (onderwerp):
  

Following his advice could get you into trouble.

Criticising others is so easy.

Cooking for a large group requires careful planning and preparation.

• After these expressions (uitdrukkingen):

to feel like, it’s no use, it’s worth, there’s no, be busy, can’t help 

For example:

It’s no use telling him.

There’s no denying he sings well.

She can’t help laughing at his silly jokes.

They are afraid of..... (to swim) in the sea.

bij korte werkwoorden verdubbelt de laatste medeklinker

She is good at.... (to dance)

Let op dat bij werkwoorden die eindigen op een e, de e komt te vervallen.
