Feiten, meningen en feestdagen (celebrations). 

• Het lidwoord (article) is never on its own.
• it is always in front of a noun, het zelfstandig naamwoord

Articles

Articles belong to the noun that they are in front of. 

For example:

de hond-the dog

de kat-the cat

het konijn-the rabbit

You can also use een or a. A dog, a cat, a rabbit. We use een when the noun is indefinite. 

Examples

het huisdier-the pet

het boek-the book

het kind-the child

het raam-the window

When we talk about something we cannot count, we drop the article. 

Article or not

Wil je een koekje?-specific amount

Wil je koffie of thee?-no specific amount

Wil je ....... kopje koffie? 

Wil je ...... suiker in je koffie?

Wil je ..... klontje suiker in je koffie?

Nouns get article de in the plural

Zelfstandige naamwoorden (nouns) krijgen in het meervoud (plural) “de” als lidwoord:

de jongen – de jongens

het meisje – de meisjes

het konijn-de konijnen

Most Dutch nouns that end on a consonant get -en at the end in the plural

And others get  -s in the plural: 
Hotel-hotels
varken-varkens

There are a few exceptions.

kind - kinderen, blad - bladeren, ei - eieren, lied - liederen

Words that get 's in plural

All words that end on a vowel (except -e, é, en -ee):

  -a: de opa – de opa’s

  -i: de taxi – de taxi’s

  -o: de auto – de auto’s

  -u: de paraplu – de paraplu’s

  -y: de baby – de baby’s
