Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
To limit/delay global warming different things can be done:
1.
slow down the population growth; according to the UN we will grow from 8 billion to 10 billion people in 2050. This growing population already needs almost two planets to be able to maintain its current standard of living.
2.
save energy; use less energy by changing your lifestyle. If you swap your regular hamburger for a vegetarian burger, you will save 7 square metres of land, enough water for a 10-minute shower and enough greenhouse gases for a 29-kilometre drive.
3.
capture and store greenhouse gases; for example, when making European charcoal, the strong greenhouse gas methane is captured and burned.
4.
make an energy transition. As you read in the previous section, it is necessary to switch to renewable energy, also known as green or sustainable energy. Think of solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy and biomass energy. Unfortunately, they all have disadvantages too.

A historical breakthrough
  • The Paris Climate Agreement focuses on an energy transition (source 11). Somewhere in the second half of this century, there must be a balance between man-made emissions and the capacity of forests and oceans to absorb CO2. 
  • Rich countries have to reduce their emissions 
  • Poor countries are encouraged to reduce their emissions. 



  • Mostly because poor countries are still developing. MEDCs bear the greatest responsibility for global warming
