Direct speech
You use direct speechto repeat the direct words that someone has said. Sometimes these sentences are placed between quotation marks.
John said: "I have seen the new Apple iPhone."
Ezra said: "I really like old cars."

Indirect / reported speech
You use indirect / reported speech to retell what someone else has said. Because the sentences have already been spoken, reported speech is often in the past tense.
John said that he had seen the new Apple iPhone.
Ezra said that he really liked old cars.
