Why do these verb not end with -ed?

Past simple 

A situation which started and ended in the past.

It is FINISHED.

Signal words: LADY

Last (month/year), Ago, Dates, Yesterday

How

Regular verb	+ ed to the infinitive	Start ---> Start ed
Irregular verb	Study the verb list	Page 214-215
Verb ends with -e	+ - d to the infinitive	Lik e ---> Like d
Verb ends with vowel + consonant	double the consonant	St op ---> Stop ped
Verb ends with - y (except for play)	replace the -y with - ied	T r y ---> Tr ied

Irregular verbs

These verbs do not follow the same rules when you use the past tense.
