Goals

After this lesson, you can:

use "some" and "any" in a sentence.

Some and any

Some and any are used to describe:

Indefinite quantities

(onbepaalde hoeveelheid)

And both of them mean the same:

A number, a few, etc.

For example

I need some eggs.

He doesn't have any eggs.

Do you need any eggs?

Can I have some eggs, please?

So when do we use "some"?

In bevestigende zinnen, gebruiken we "some":

"I invited some friends."

"Let's watch some TV."

When do we use "any"?

In ontkenningen, wanneer we willen zeggen dat iets niet zo is

 --> gebruiken we "any":

"I don't want any balloons at my party."

"We haven't received  any good news this year."

Questions

Bij vraagzinnen moet je extra goed opletten wanneer je some of any moet gebruiken.

Als je een vraag stelt en je hebt geen idee wat het antwoord zal zijn, gebruik je: "Any"

Als je een vraag stelt en je kan ervan uitgaan dat het antwoord JA zal zijn, gebruik je: "Some"

Examples

"Is there any milk in the fridge?"

We used "any", because we don't know what the answer will be.

"Do you want some cake?"

We used "some", because we can assume what the answer will be --> yes!
