Introduction

Part of the British Values series. In this lesson, children will explore tolerance and respect by considering how to help a new child.

Instructions

We have designed our British Values lessons so that teachers can pick up and teach a topic to their class with confidence.
We have chosen to use a balance of interactive tools and 'unplugged' creative activities.

Lessons can be taught directly from the LessonUp slides but work best when children have access to the pupil app
Lessonup.app

If you have any questions or want to know more, please do get in touch. We'd love to show you how LessonUp can make 'Every Class Better Than The Last'

Welcoming a New Child
British Values Tolerance and Respect

Slide 1 - Diapositive

This lesson can be used as part of a school's British Values curriculum.
It also links into the PSHE Association Programme of Study for KS2:
L1. to recognise reasons for rules and laws; consequences of not adhering to rules and laws
L2. to recognise there are human rights, that are there to protect everyone
L3. about the relationship between rights and responsibilities
L4. the importance of having compassion towards others; shared responsibilities
we all have for caring for other people and living things; how to show care and
concern for others
L5. ways of carrying out shared responsibilities for protecting the environment in school and at home; how everyday choices can affect the environment (e.g. reducing, reusing, recycling; food choices)
In this lesson, we will:
  • Recap the meaning of 'tolerance' and 'respect'
  • Consider how we can make someone new feel welcome

What does tolerance and respect mean to you?

Slide 3 - Carte mentale

You may wish to pre-teach these words or have some picture or vocabulary prompts to support children with this activity.

Once children have submitted their answers, move their responses around the slide to sort or discuss in more detail.

Tolerance and Respect:
  • Accepting others
     for who they are
  • Treating others how
     you wish to be treated

Slide 4 - Diapositive

You might wish to add to/ amend this definition and use it to display in your classroom.

Slide 5 - Vidéo

Beegu by Alexis Deacon is a beautiful picture book and links well with the topic of tolerance and respect.
The main character is an alien who feels excluded.
As you read the story, draw out some of the emotions that Beegu feels as someone who is new and different.

How might a new child
feel on their first day at school?

Slide 6 - Carte mentale

You may wish to return to the Beegu story and amend your question to focus on the character and how he felt, if this is more appropriate for your class.

Remind children to use the words tolerance/tolerant and respect/respectful in their answers.
Look at each person
 on the spinner.

What can they do to help
 a new child feel welcome?

Slide 7 - Diapositive

This activity allows the class to explore how different people within the school community can support a new child.

The school building is one of the categories. How can we adapt our school to help someone new?

Create a welcome leaflet that can be shared
with children who are new to the school.

Slide 8 - Question ouverte

Children can put the learning from this lesson into practice by creating a welcome leaflet which can be displayed in the school's entrance.
Think about the content you wish add:
Who's Who
Map of the School
Classroom Routines
Dinner Time
Playtime
Rewards
You may wish the children to work in groups or for the class to create one leaflet.
Tolerance and Respect:
  • Accepting others for
     who they are
  • Treating others how
     you wish to be treated

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Recap this initial slide with the class.

I know how I can make
someone new feel welcome
😒🙁😐🙂😃

Slide 10 - Sondage

This poll can give you a quick snapshot of the class and an insight into who may need to explore the issue in more detail. The results will be displayed anonymously but you can look into how each child has answered the poll in the assessment view.

There is a how to guide here.

Aardappeloproer
1917
