What does 'passive' mean?

What makes a sentence passive?

een vorm van 'to be' + ww-ed (3e rijtje) 

It is not important who is doing something

Active: The teacher teaches the student.

Passive: The student is taught (by the teacher).

How to recognize a passive sentence...

- is er een vorm van 'to be' (be, am, are, is, was, were, been)

- staat er een voltooid deelwoord (ww-ed / 3e rijtje)?

- komt daarna 'by' gevolgd door een zelfst nw of persoonllijk vnw? Zo niet, kan er 'by zombies' achter?

Is het antwoord op bovenstaande vragen ja?

ACTIVE= He steals a bike.

Steals = present simple

ACTIVE

ONDERWERP = WIE /WAT het doet staat vooraan de zin.

PASSIVE: The bike is stolen.

Is (form of 'to be') = present simple

stolen = voltooid deelwoord

PASSIVE

DE ACTIE  staat vooraan. NIET wie het doet

Julia rescued three cats.

Making a passive sentence

Angry penguins | attack | my sister.

Onderwerp                              Lijdend voorwerp

1. Lijdend voorwerp komt aan het begin van de zin.

2. In welke tijd staat de zin?
present simple? gebruik: am / is / are | past simple? gebruik: was / were

3. Verander het  werkwoord in het voltooid deelwoord (ww-ed / 3e rijtje).

My sister is attacked (by angry penguins // by zombies).
