Er zijn twee soorten relative clauses:

• defining relative clause 
• non-defining relative clauses

Relative clauses

Defining relative clauses (no commas):

Je kan that weglaten als:

• het het lijdend voorwerp is van de zin
• Als het gevolgd wordt door een voornaamwoord (name or I, you, he, she etc.)

This is the house that Jack built. 

Relative clauses

Defining relative clauses:  Je hebt ze nodig in een zin om het kloppend te maken. De zin is essentieel. 

Non defining relative clauses: Geeft extra informatie maar is niet essentieel. Kan tussen komma's.
