Earthquakes
Los Angeles has a perfect climate because of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean around it. There are often many hours of sunshine and cool breezes. However, there are also earthquakes in this area. Most earthquakes happen along a fault, which is a crack in the earth's crust (breuk in de aardkorst). One very famous fault is the San Andreas Fault. One of the last earthquakes that took place in California was felt all over Los Angeles.

Questions
1 In the report and video they talk about an earthquake which happened the night before. Do they expect more shocks?
2 Did anyone die during this earthquake?
3 What is the most important tip you could give someone when there's an earthquake?
4 The earthquake caused a large amount of damage. Can you give some examples of this from the news report and the video? Name at least five things.
5 Earthquakes are natural disasters like bushfires and hurricanes. In certain areas they happen often, so people have to prepare themselves by building sturdy houses, for instance. Could you name a natural disaster that could happen in the Netherlands? And how do we try to prepare ourselves for such a disaster?

Slide 15 - Diapositive

Answers
1 Yes, they do. They say 'California is bracing for more aftershocks'. This means that the area is still in danger.
2 No, the text says: 'No deaths were reported.'
3 The most important tip is: Go outside. In the report someone says: '(The) best place to be is just out in the open.'
4 In the report and video you can see and read about: cracks in the roads, fires, chaos in supermarkets, a collapsed chimney, a kitchen that was completely destroyed, a trailer that fell over.
5 A large part of the Netherlands lies below sea level. This could lead to a flood, like we had in 1953. We've prepared ourselves by making sure the dunes are strong enough, and we've built dams.
