How to use during, for, since, past, to and until

How to use during?

1 You use during when something happens throughout a longer period of time.

Example: Jessica will stay in Hawaii during the holidays.

2 You use during when an event takes place during another ongoing event.

Example: During the lecture, Martin dropped his pen.

How to use for?

You use for when you want to stress the duration of an event or action.

Example: I have been saving money for years.

How to use since?

You use since for actions or events that started at a point in time in the past.

Example: I've had a headache since yesterday.

NB. When using since, always use a Perfect tense!

How to use past and to?

You use past and to for telling time.

Examples: It is five past ten. / It is a quarter to five.

How to use until?

You use until for actions or events that take place up to a particular time.

Example: Please stay here until I come back
